Job Purpose
The company writer's role is central to Investors Chronicle's aim of showing that investing can be a rewarding challenge. It involves analysing the performance of quoted companies and giving informed comment on the shares for private investors.
An ability to analyse financial statements, look behind headline figures and come to well-argued conclusions is therefore essential. Previous experience of equity markets is clearly an advantage, but Financial Times Business offers training to bridge the gaps in what are otherwise ideal candidates.The company writer will have a beat of around 100 companies covering the transport, engineering, electronic and aerospace & defence sectors and will be expected to report on any noteworthy developments concerning these companies, including M&A activity and corporate results, and come to well reasoned conclusions on what this means for shareholders. Company writers also produce tips, news analysis and features for the magazine and contribute daily to the company news section of the magazine’s website.
Essential Skills
- An understanding of financial accounts
- A keen interest in the stock market and the ability to interrogate chief executives and finance directors, usually on a one-to-one basis, are essential to the job.
- All applicants should also possess an inquisitive mind and be able to demonstrate the ability to write clear and coherent financial copy.
Training will be provided although an understanding of Datastream, Bloomberg, Topic and Lexis Nexis Professional is preferred.
