Financial Times are looking for a Developer who can contribute to its continued and ongoing digital expansion and growth. Whether as part of an Agile team or when working on tasks independently, the successful candidate will demonstrate an appreciation of considerations including but not limited to meeting budgets, timescales, deadlines and reporting requirements.

This is a technical role that requires a thorough understanding of web technologies and this person will demonstrate the flair, flexibility, experience and confidence to work across the entire application stack comprising mostly Java and Perl applications.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
• Working as part of an Agile team or independently on own initiative dependent upon size of deliverables
• Ensure work assignments are delivered on time and budget
• Working with business and technical stakeholders to deliver business benefit
• Ensure solutions are robust and technically fit for purpose.
• Ensure that development projects are carried out in accordance with the organisation’s agreed standards, methods and procedures.
• Ensure Service Delivery acceptance and handover procedures are followed for all new developments.
• Develop and foster knowledge and skills transfer, to remove key person dependencies.
• Reporting to management on a weekly basis, detailing status of ongoing developments, highlighting issues/blockers in plain English.
• Test driven development

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Qualifications / Competencies / Skills / Experience
Essential
• Proven experience as a developer specialising in Java or Perl, which should include:
o Java EE or mod_perl development
o Production deployment experience of Tomcat and/or Apache
o SQL and experience of either Oracle or MySQL
o XHTML, CSS, JavaScript and Ajax
o Test Driven Design/Development and experience with testing frameworks.
• Good working knowledge of HTTP/1.1
• An appreciation of SEO, accessibility, and web standards.
• Agile methodology exposure, preferably Scrum, or a keenness to adopt Agile principles.
• Problem analysis and resolution.
• Able to work alone and use own initiative, engaging with others when needed.

Interpersonal skills:
• Ability to build effective working relationships with technical peers
• Ability to build effective working relationships with a wide range of semi and non-technical customers
• Good general written and verbal business communication skills.


Desirable
• Experience of working with an MVC Framework, i.e. Struts or Spring
• Hibernate or other ORM tools
• XML/XSL, JSP/JSTL, Velocity, Apache Ant, Maven 2
• Subversion and anthillpro
• EidosMedia Mèthode
• Flash/ActionScript/FLEX
• Enthusiasm to embrace new skills both hard and soft including agility in new ways of working and technologies used by Financial Times.
